Loading Garmin Nuvi Topographic Map Files

!±8± Loading Garmin Nuvi Topographic Map Files

Many Garmin Nuvi GPS receivers will allow you to include additional topo files to further improve their use in hiking and also other scenarios. Start with the selection of a variety of supplemental charts available from a Garmin dealer. I am going to apply Garmin MapSource Topo U. S. in this example.

Select Topo Maps for nuvi Upload

Start off simply by setting up your MapSource application on your pc. Once you have the application mounted and working, you can focus over the spot you are interested in. Choose the polygon tool in the toolbar on the top of the window, and then click on the chart portions you wish to upload to the Nuvi. It's also possible to click and move to choose larger portions, including whole states.

Right after selecting the area you want to upload, you will notice an area highlighted with light red. For this document I've chosen Wyoming, Colorado, and a portion of western Nebraska. The total amount of data you can upload will depend on your level of storage you have in your Nuvi.

Upload Topo Maps to nuvi

Now you're prepared to upload the information to the Nuvi. Connect the Nuvi to the laptop by means of your USB wire which was included with it and, if required, the driver to mount. Select the Send To Device icon in the toolbar to bring up a dialog box that will locate your Nuvi. The Nuvi ought to show up automatically in your Device window. If not, click on Find Device as well as make use of the pull down to select the device. Be certain Maps is ticked in your What To Send area of the dialog box, and then click Send. According to the dimensions of the spot you chosen, it may take quite a few minutes to generate your include file and drag it to your Nuvi.

Configuring Your Nuvi

Turn on your Nuvi. Before you go to your gps mode, click on Tools > Settings > myMaps. Depending on the model of Nuvi you have and exactly what you've got installed, you should observe the topographic maps you just installed plus the usual foundation charts. Select your check marks to deselect all except the topographic maps. They will be called with the name of the topographic maps you uploaded.

Once you get the topo chart set selected, return to the main start off up window and pick View Map. Now you'll have topographic records on your Nuvi.

If you wish to go back to the internal chart set, just go back to the myMaps window and reselect every one of the built in charts for display.

This process should function essentially the very same for various other Garmin products, too, such as the Garmin Rino and GPSMAP series. It'll work for the majority of the portable aviation products, although not for the panel mount systems.

That is it for now. Enjoy the extra features loading topographic records will provide your Nuvi, whether you will be driving or back country in some remote place.

Camcorder Reviews - Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam Camcorder

!±8± Camcorder Reviews - Sony DCR-DVD650 DVD Handycam Camcorder

Design: As such the silver and black chassis is just about the same size and shape as the DVD drive. While it definitely looks compact, it fits quite nicely in the palm of your hand. If you're using 3-inch DVD media be prepared to contend with a warm palm which could very well turn into a sweaty one with repeated use. The camcorder uses a 2.7" touch screen LCD that can be rotated as its viewfinder while its 60x optical zoom is completely internal for a more compact device.

Specifications: Featuring a 1/8-inch Advanced HAD CCD Imager the Sony DCR-DVD650 and a 60x optical zoom with a 2000x digital zoom, the camcorder is certainly powerful enough. Equipped with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens the camcorder also offers SteadyShot image stabilization to ensure that the shot stays steady even on full optical zoom. The camcorder itself comes with a respectable internal memory of 16GB but is made to utilize either DVD; DVD-R/-RW/+RW and +R DL (Dual Layer) 3-inch disc media or Sony's Memory Stick flash media. The camcorder has a host of other features but the ones of note include a built-in zoom microphone, a one-touch DVD burn option and an easy Handycam function to turn off all other controls except the most basic recording options.

Features & Performance: For the most part controls are easy to use on the Sony DCR-DVD650. Video quality is also topnotch but while the camcorder does offer a choice between Sony's own Memory Stick flash memory or 3-inch DVD disc media both are limited by the advantages and disadvantages of each media type.

All in all the Sony DCR-DVD650 is a very good media bridge camcorder with plenty of powerful features. The Hybrid Plus system offers users more choices for media according to the requirements and should make a good 'bridge' device for those moving on from 3-inch DVD media.

Review - Acer Aspire 6920-6422 Laptop

!±8± Review - Acer Aspire 6920-6422 Laptop

Pros: Cosmetic Design and build quality, Fast Processor, Lots of Ram, Blu-Ray, Fast Dedicated Video Card, HDMI Output, Bluetooth, Wireless N

Cons: Speakers are weak compared to the rest of the system, but not bad, Could use a bigger hard drive.

Summary: Hands down, this is the best value in a no compromise full power multi-media laptop. This should replace your old desktop pc, or be your first pc if you don't own one yet.

What can I say about the Acer Aspire 6920-6422? Intel dual core 2.5mhz processor - check, 4gb of ram - check, dedicated nVidia 9500 video card with HDMI - check, Blue-Ray player - check, Bluetooth - check, Wireless N - check. All this packaged in a beautiful shell that you can't take your eyes off of.

This laptop is designed to do everything a PC is supposed to do. The core elements of this laptop should give you years of use for any office application, graphic intensive multimedia applications, with HD movies and gaming in all it's glory. The combination of the dual core 2.5ghz processor, 4gb of ddr2 ram, and super fast nVidia 9500 video card is the perfect combination for the current Windows Vista operating system. It's the only laptop in this price range that puts all these things together in a beautiful and well made shell.

Without getting too technical with speed charts, features, and benchmarks, it's suffice to say that the Intel processor in the Acer Aspire 6920-6422 if one of the best available today. Faster than any other CPU in almost any laptop in any price range. It's going to breeze through Microsoft Office applications like Excel, Word, and Powerpoint. Plenty of power to handle rendering and processing in any graphic application such as found in Adobe CSx suites. It will even power through any processor intensive strategy games giving you fast response times. Trust me, the processor will not be the weak link in your laptop adventures.

The next link in the chain is the memory. With 4gb of DDR2 ram, Windows Vista will have plenty of room to open multiple office applications, surf the web, and check email all at the same time. You'll be able to switch between any of these applications with speed and confidence. For graphic intensive applications, you'll be able to work with large photo files, edit HD video content (like from your camera or camcorder), and seamlessly cut, paste, and undo any kind of multimedia content the typical consumer would ever work with.

The final link in the chain is the video card. The Acer Aspire 6920-6422 comes with the nVidia GeForce 9500M GS. This is the laptop version from it's powerful line of desktop video cards. Most laptops use an integrated intel solution that works fine for office applications and watching movies. However, for graphic intensive applications like from Adobe, and gaming, you really need a powerful dedicated video card. The 9500 GS in this Acer does not disappoint. Again, without getting too technical, you'll be able to watch HD movies using nVidia's highly rated PureVideo HD, and play most games at or near their max quality settings. The other nice thing about the video setup on this laptop is that it comes with an HDMI out port. This will let you hook up your laptop to your 60" HDTV and watch Blu-Ray movies in all their digital high definition glory.

Now lets talk about all the other specs that make up why this is such a great value. I don't put as much emphasis on the hard drive size as I used too. Until solid state drives become the de facto standard, there is very little difference in the laptop community. The hard drive is your standard SATA 250gb 5400rpm 2.5" drive. Nothing particularly special here. But at 250gb, it's large enough not to leave you wanting for any office application and gaming. For you multimedia users who edit large graphic files like raw photos and HD video, you probably already have an external drive for that stuff anyway. If you don't have one, get one. We all know how hard drives can and will fail eventually, so back up your pictures, movies, and projects to an external hard drive right away. Don't leave stuff like that on a laptop that can be dropped, lost, or stolen, right?

Now there are a ton of other features here that I'm going to skim through a bit, but these are the key features that will save you money because they are not normally found on other laptops in this price range. In particular, the built in Blu-Ray drive. You'd pay 0-0 for one of these separately. Bluetooth built in - you'd pay - for this separately. HDMI out - built in and cannot be added separately, so this is really really nice. Digital sound with s/pdif out - you'd pay -0 separately. Then there are the features you find on most laptops in this range such as memory card support, modem for dial up, ethernet, and USB ports. There's also the 16-inch 16:9 ratio display, built-in subwoofer, and touch-sensitive multimedia control panel. Don't let the subwoofer feature fool you. This is still a laptop speaker configuration that sounds better than most laptops, but is still a group of speakers in a thin plastic case. Don't expect to be able to hear this thing clearly in a noisy room, but it does sound great while typing away in your favorite chair.

I really like the blu-ray drive, bluetooth, and hdmi port. You can watch blu-ray movies on your HDTV and chat using your cell phone's bluetooth wireless headset on all the voice messaging services or VOIp like skype. These are the kind of features usually reserved for desktop users who would buy these things as add ons to their pc (like me). If you really wannabe be cool, buy a bluetooth keyboard and air mouse and use your hdtv as your main monitor. Turn your laptop into a true piece of home theater equipment since it already has the blu-ray drive, hdmi, and s/pdif audio.

The wireless-n is a nice feature. It's main advantage right now is range. Although it's theoretically 6x faster than wireless-g, it will be a long time before the cable/dsl companies will be able to pump out that kind of speed to the consumer. The theoretical 4x the range of wireless-g is where it's at. If you have a wireless-n router at home, then you'll be able to roam around your home without dropping the signal. Also, even though you won't see any difference in internet speeds, wireless-n offers enough speed to stream HD video content smoothly and transfer files between your laptop and desktop much faster as well.

Still, with all these features and power found in the Acer Aspire 6920-6422, I thought of a couple of things that would make this little gem standout just a tad more. For one, a SATA port for external hard drives. Of course you can buy USB external hard drives that offer virtually the same speed, but I prefer using the native SATA interface whenever possible. Most USB drives are really SATA drives with a conversion to USB built in. The only other thing I'd want is the latest dual-band wireless n. It already has wireless n built in, but they have recently come out with a dual band wireless n that can operate on a different frequency. This reduces interference commonly found in homes and offices that have all kinds of wireless devices.

If you're on the fence about deciding between a laptop and a desktop, get this laptop. In the long run, you'll appreciate the portability, space savings, and power savings of this laptop without compromising processing power and features. Plus, you won't need to buy a separate monitor ever, since you probably already have an HDTV which can be used as a monitor.

Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS Navigator Review

!±8± Garmin GPSMAP 60CSx GPS Navigator Review

I had recently bought a 60CSx by Garmin and it is one of the best GPS navigators in the market. My old navigator was old school anyway so I had to buy a new one.

The 60CSx has practically everything that you can ask for. It weights 7.5 oz with batteries and has highly sensitive, insanely accurate GPS receiver to track your exact location- even if you are in thick forests or deep canyons. And it has a brilliant TFT color display that works even in bright sunlight.

It came with a 64MB card for storage of map data. Of course if you want more storage, you'd have to buy another card and that's what I did.

It has an altimeter barometric electronic compass which will accompany you on both land and sea.

Coming back to the memory card, you can buy pre-programmed Garmin cards that come with nautical charts, city streets and topographic maps.

The 60CSx is compatible with almost all MapSource products by Garmin, like City Navigator, BlueChart, U.S. Topo, and U.S. Topo 24k. This device comes loaded with the auto-route basemap of America, providing automated routing abilities, covering tide data, highways and exits. It also has a preloaded database of marine points.

And if its turn-by-turn guidance that you want, you won't be disappointed. You can get directions as you drive, while an integrated trip system tells readings of stopped time, odometer, overall average, moving average, max speed, total time and much, much more.

It has 256 colors, and a 2.6 inch TFT display that is made to present trip and mapping information accurately and clearly in all lighting conditions. And its case is rugged too - it is water resistant and conforms to IEC standards (60529 IPX7). That means you can plunge it into water to the depth of 1 meter for 30 minutes and it will still work!

When you use twin AA alkaline batteries with it, you will get about 20 hours battery life. The altimeter barometric system of this device gives automated pressure trend recording, along with ascent/descent rate, current elevation, total ascent and minimum/maximum elevation. Its electronic compass permits you to get precise heading even as you stand still.

Another important feature of this device is the cool 10,000 point automated track log. It has 20 saved tracks of 500 points each. So you can retrace the trail in both ways. And then there is a double position display mode. If those aren't a lot of features, I don't know what are.

Its processor is really fast and allows auto routing, audio alerts and turn by turn directions as you use MapSource software, which is optional. It can be stored on the 64MB card that comes with the unit.

You can quickly download information with the help of USB port interface. And you can use the dedicated serial port to share navigation details with plotters, repeaters, and autopilots.

It is highly ergonomic and you can use it easily even if your fingers are wet or cold.

Well these are all the features I could find, but there are even more. I'm still discovering new things with my new GPSMAP 60CSx.
